Open Question: I learned something today while hiking. What do you think?

I am visiting Hong Kong on business. I thought I would walk up a hill to a monastery. After leaving the monastery I started back down the hill. I saw some people with hiking poles going up another hill. I had water, and some maps that I had printed. I decided to follow. Sure enough it was a very nice hike, but I needed to get back to the hotel. My Chinese is not very good. I asked some hikers if there was a better way back to Shatin other than the trail I had just used. One hiker says go left, but I did not find what I was looking for. Another said to go back. I failed again. Another hiker tried to help me. I sort of became angry inside because I thought they were playing a game of “mess with the Westerner”. Sure enough all three had given me good directions. The trail was overgrown and hard to spot. It was a wonderful trail, and it brought me back into Shatin not far from a train station. I should not have assumed someone was “messing” with me. The monastery is called "Ten Thousand Buddahs". I do not know the name of the mountain. The map says "Wan Chuck Yang". The trail returned me just a short distance from "Fo Tan" station. My hotel is very close to "New Town Plaza" at "Shatin" station.
