Open Question: How to potty train an older dog?

My dog for the last 4 years at least, has been trained on pee pads. If you don't already know, pee pads are freaking expensive (imo). So I've been training him to go outside. It's actually working fairly well, EXCEPT he always has an accident in the night. .___. He's used to having the pee pad and being able to wake up and pee. I know this sounds mean, but is there any way for me to have him wait till morning? I'm up pretty early. If this matters, he's a mix of a Miniature Pinscher and Jack Russell.
